The Moscow State Art Gallery of the USSR People’s Artist A. Shilov, located in the building of an old mansion, opened its doors to visitors in 1997. The gallery was named after the great artist A. Shilov in the years of his life. Such a phenomenon is extremely rare and speaks of an unprecedented level of skill of the artist. Loyal fans of the artist wanted to have a constant opportunity to observe his work. Their numerous requests led to the opening of the gallery in May 1997. Alexander Shilov decided to donate over 350 of his works to the capital free of charge and solemnly promised to increase the collection of the Moscow State Gallery every year.

To date, the permanent exhibition of the Moscow State Picture Gallery of the People’s Artist of the USSR A. Shilov is approaching the mark of a thousand works. Due to the increase in the stock of paintings in 2003, it was decided to build a new gallery building. The new building, designed by architect M. N. Posokhin, constituted a single complex with an old mansion of the Moscow State Gallery.
